How to Choose a Screen for XGIMI AURA 3 Max and Pro?

How to Choose a Screen for XGIMI AURA 3 Max and Pro?

The right screen for your XGIMI AURA 3 depends on how much light reaches the screen, where people sit, how large an image you want, and whether the screen needs to disappear after use.

For a dark or well-controlled room—particularly when budget or a very large motorized format matters—Soft Grey Matte is worth considering. For 72–120-inch family setups with a wide sofa, CBSP is usually the most balanced starting point. If a seamless optical surface is the priority, look first at a KBSP fixed-frame screen around 130–133 inches. At 150 inches, seamless Lenticular UST is our preferred route, with both fixed-frame and motorized floor-rising formats available. For strong ambient light, daytime viewing and the best image quality from central seats, Fresnel ALR deserves a closer look.

At 150 inches, add another question: is the projection surface one continuous piece, or is it joined?

XGIMI has announced the AURA 3 Max and AURA 3 Pro as RGB triple-laser ultra-short-throw projectors, with projection sizes advertised up to 200 inches. Its published brightness figures are 5,700 ISO lumens for the Max and 4,100 ISO lumens for the Pro. These are manufacturer specifications, rather than measured results for every picture mode.

That makes larger screens relevant, but the projector's maximum image size alone does not decide which screen will work best.

Understand the Materials Before Comparing Them

There are three broad approaches in this guide:

  • Soft Grey Matte: A broadly diffusing grey surface, which is suitable for UST when specific conditions are met.
  • UST lenticular CLR: directional optical materials designed to receive projected light from below while suppressing light from above.
  • UST Fresnel ALR: a directional optical surface that redirects UST projection light toward a defined viewing area and can also help reject side light.

Within WUPRO's range, CBSP, KBSP and the material sold as Lenticular UST are choices within the broader UST lenticular family. Their material names identify different implementations, rather than three unrelated optical technologies.

Also distinguish Lenticular UST from Lenticular LT. The latter is intended for standard-throw or long-throw setups. An ALR or CLR label by itself does not establish compatibility with an AURA 3.

A Quick Comparison for AURA 3 Buyers

WUPRO material option A useful starting point for Main buying consideration

Soft Grey Matte

(Although it is compatible with UST, it is not specifically designed for UST)

Evening movies, limited budgets and very large motorized screens in controlled light Broad seating coverage and a more accessible route to large sizes; limited protection against uncontrolled room light;Loss of screen brightness
CBSP 72–120-inch family setups with overhead light or a wide sofa Wide, flexible seating and high perceived contrast; fixed-frame 130–150-inch versions use joined surfaces
KBSP Buyers seeking a seamless 130–133-inch fixed-frame UST screen The preferred one-piece fixed-frame optical option in this size range
Lenticular UST / seamless Black Grid Buyers seeking a seamless 150-inch fixed-frame screen or a large motorized floor-rising UST screen The preferred one-piece option at 150 inches; large floor-rising options include 130, 133 and 150 inches
Fresnel ALR Strong ambient light, daytime viewing and the best image quality from central seats Strong directional light control and image punch; the brightest viewing area is narrower

These are selection recommendations, not results from a controlled AURA 3 screen comparison. Exact gain, viewing behavior and construction depend on the screen model and size.

Soft Grey Matte: A Practical Choice for Limited Budgets or Very Large Motorized Screens

Yes, WUPRO Soft Grey Matte can be used with an ultra-short-throw projector. The WUPRO Gallery Soft Grey Matte product page lists it as compatible with UST projectors, with a gain of 0.9.

However, Soft Grey Matte serves a different purpose from CLR or Fresnel ALR optical materials designed specifically for UST projectors. Its matte surface diffuses reflected image light more evenly across a wider viewing area, while the gray surface can lower the perceived black floor and make dark areas appear deeper.

At the same time, a gray surface also reduces some image brightness. In a completely dark room, a gray screen does not increase the projector's native contrast ratio. The final result depends on the projector's brightness, screen size, room reflections, and your preferred balance between black levels and highlight brightness.

Consider Soft Grey Matte if:

  • You mainly watch after sunset or can control daylight with curtains or blinds.
  • The room lights can be dimmed or directed away from the screen.
  • You need a wide viewing area for family members seated across a large sofa.
  • Your budget does not extend to a dedicated UST CLR or Fresnel ALR screen at the required size.
  • You need a 150-inch or larger motorized screen and prioritize a continuous, seamless projection surface over daytime ambient-light rejection.
  • You prefer a softer, more uniform image and want to reduce the risk of emphasizing visible speckle with some RGB triple-laser projector setups.

For users of the XGIMI AURA 3 series or other UST projectors, we generally do not list “Soft Gray Matte” as a default option or our top recommendation. It is not a directional CLR/ALR material designed specifically for UST projectors, so it cannot redirect projected light toward the viewing area while rejecting overhead or side light in the same way as a dedicated UST optical screen. At the same screen size, its brightness retention and perceived contrast under ambient light may be weaker than those of some dedicated UST optical materials.

However, this does not mean that Soft Grey Matte is unsuitable for the AURA 3. If your room lighting can be controlled and you can accept some loss of brightness, it can still be a compelling value-oriented option. It provides broad seating coverage, a natural and uniform image, and can help improve perceived black levels in a controlled-light environment. For viewers who are sensitive to laser speckle, it is also worth comparing directly with dedicated UST optical materials, although no screen should be expected to eliminate speckle completely.

When purchasing an extra-large screen (150 inches or more), why might you want to consider a ‘soft grey matt’ ?

At 150 inches and above, seamless dedicated UST optical materials become considerably less common, particularly in motorized floor-rising or drop-down formats.

Dedicated UST optical materials use precise directional microstructures. As screen size increases, manufacturing, transporting, handling, tensioning and maintaining long-term flatness across one continuous surface become more difficult. As a result, some very large optical screens use horizontally joined material, while the relatively limited seamless options often carry a substantial price premium.

Soft Grey Matte can offer a more practical and affordable route to a very large, seamless motorized projection screen. However, the Soft Grey Matte material name alone does not guarantee that every available size uses a one-piece surface. Always confirm the construction of the exact product and size before ordering.

For viewers with controlled room lighting, a limited budget and a preference for a large continuous image, Soft Grey Matte is a practical option. However, it should not be treated as a lower-cost substitute for CLR or Fresnel ALR in a bright daytime room.

Limitations to Understand Before Choosing

  • Soft Grey Matte does not provide the directional ambient-light rejection of a dedicated UST CLR or ALR material.
  • The gray surface reduces some image brightness, and this trade-off can become more noticeable as the screen size increases.
  • UST projectors send light toward the screen at a steep angle, which can make small waves or surface irregularities more visible. For a very large motorized screen, pay close attention to the tensioning system and long-term flatness.
  • Strong overhead, side or frontal light can still wash out the image and reduce perceived contrast.

If maintaining brightness and natural color reproduction is your priority in a completely dark room, include Soft White Matte in your comparison.

For a real-world visual reference, watch this video featuring a 133-inch WUPRO FlowArc Soft Grey Matte motorized drop-down screen paired with the XGIMI AURA 3 Max.

Please treat the footage as an example of an actual installation rather than a controlled performance test. Camera exposure, filming angle, projector settings and video processing mean that it cannot fully reproduce the screen's actual brightness, black levels or visible laser speckle in your room.

Lenticular UST: The Preferred Seamless Choice at 150 Inches

A UST lenticular screen uses small directional optical structures to receive the steeply angled projector light from below while absorbing much of the ambient light arriving from above. Horizontal seating coverage is generally broader and more uniform than the highest-gain viewing zone of a Fresnel screen, making lenticular CLR practical for family viewing.

At 150 inches, WUPRO Lenticular UST is our preferred option when a seamless optical surface is the priority. It avoids the joined surface used by the 130–150-inch CBSP fixed-frame variants while preserving dedicated UST light control and flexible seating.

Consider the 150-inch WUPRO Gallery Evo Seamless Black Grid Lenticular CLR screen for a permanent installation. This specific model is listed with a one-piece viewing surface, 0.8 gain and a nominal 160° viewing angle. Those specifications belong to this product and should not be applied to every WUPRO lenticular screen.

For a retractable installation, use the separate WUPRO Seamless Lenticular UST motorized floor-rising screen rather than assuming that the standard CBSP motorized range extends to 150 inches. The current product page confirms a seamless 150-inch surface and also lists 130- and 133-inch seamless sizes, making this the preferred large-format motorized route across the 130–150-inch class.

KBSP: The Preferred Seamless Choice at 130–133 Inches UST fixed frame screen

KBSP is another WUPRO UST lenticular option. WUPRO's material guide lists it with a nominal gain of 0.7 and identifies it as suitable for UST projection.

For buyers who want to move beyond 120 inches without stepping up to a 150-inch screen, KBSP is our preferred seamless fixed-frame option in the 130–133-inch range. It is especially relevant when a one-piece optical surface matters more than choosing a larger joined CBSP fixed-frame screen. If you need a motorized floor-rising screen at this size, compare the separate seamless Lenticular UST model instead.

The product behind this recommendation is the 132-inch WUPRO Seamless KBSP Black Lenticular CLR/ALR fixed-frame screen. Its current specification identifies the screen material as KBSP with a PET base layer and TPU surface, and confirms a seamless one-piece 132-inch projection surface.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • The exact product and material name on the quotation.
  • That the selected 130-inch or 133-inch surface is one continuous piece.
  • Gain and brightness from your regular seating positions.
  • The fixed-frame dimensions, mounting position and delivery access.

Use the WUPRO screen material guide for the broader material comparison, then check the dedicated product page for current availability and size-specific specifications.

CBSP: The Best All-Round Choice at 72–120 Inches

CBSP is a high-contrast implementation of UST lenticular CLR. Its key strengths are a wide, more consistent horizontal viewing area, flexible seating and strong perceived contrast. This makes it particularly suitable for families whose regular seats extend across both the center and sides of a wide sofa.

For XGIMI AURA 3 setups, we generally recommend CBSP most strongly from 72 to 120 inches. Within this range, it offers the most balanced combination of overhead-light control, high contrast, seating flexibility and installation choice.

CBSP is a material that helps to reduce the speckle in visible RGB lasers. This is of significant importance for three-laser projectors; however, reducing speckle does not guarantee a completely speckle-free image.

For a permanent wall installation, consider the WUPRO Gallery Evo UST2 CBSP fixed-frame screen. Its 130–150-inch fixed-frame versions use a horizontally joined projection surface, so buyers who prioritize a seamless image should compare KBSP at 130–133 inches or seamless Lenticular UST at 150 inches instead.

For a retractable setup, LeApex CBSP floor-rising screens provide another installation route. The current CBSP motorized range extends to 130 inches, but the price increase from 120 to 130 inches is substantial. For this reason, 72–120 inches remains the practical CBSP sweet spot for most buyers.

Fresnel ALR: The Strongest Choice for Daytime Image Quality from Center Seats

A UST Fresnel screen uses curved optical zones to direct projected light toward a defined viewing area. Compared with a typical UST lenticular surface, Fresnel is usually the stronger option when the room has substantial ambient light from above, the sides or multiple directions.

Choose Fresnel when you watch frequently during the day, cannot fully control window or room light, and prioritize the brightest, highest-contrast image from a central viewing position. Under these conditions, Fresnel is generally our first recommendation for the strongest perceived daytime image quality.

The WUPRO Peacock Evo Fresnel ALR fixed-frame screen is designed for this type of setup. Its current FAQ identifies the 100–150-inch range as using continuous optical surfaces.

The trade-off is seating flexibility. A Fresnel screen's highest-gain viewing area is concentrated closer to the center, and brightness can fall more noticeably toward the sides. A nominal viewing-angle specification does not describe how much peak brightness is retained off center.

If several people regularly watch from the left and right ends of a wide sofa, Fresnel is usually not our first recommendation. In that situation, CBSP or another suitable lenticular CLR material will generally provide a more consistent image across the seating area.

Choosing 120, 150 or Even 200 Inches

Measure the image area first

The table below gives calculated dimensions for a 16:9 image. It excludes the frame, housing, black borders and installation clearances.

Diagonal Approximate image width Approximate image height
100 inches 87.2 in / 221 cm 49.0 in / 125 cm
120 inches 104.6 in / 266 cm 58.8 in / 149 cm
130 inches 113.3 in / 288 cm 63.7 in / 162 cm
150 inches 130.7 in / 332 cm 73.5 in / 187 cm
180 inches 156.9 in / 398 cm 88.2 in / 224 cm
200 inches 174.3 in / 443 cm 98.1 in / 249 cm

A 150-inch image has 125% more area than a 100-inch image, and about 56% more area than a 120-inch image.

With the same delivered light output, the larger area receives less light per unit area. Moving from 120 to 150 inches would reduce average illumination per unit area to about 64%, before accounting for changes in optics, settings or screen behavior. This is a geometric comparison, not a measured AURA 3 brightness result.

The Max's higher published light output provides more headroom, but neither model's lumen specification guarantees satisfying HDR or daytime performance at its maximum diagonal.

Understand what “seamless” refers to

For this decision, seamless means one continuous projection surface across the active image area.

A frame assembled from multiple sections can still hold a seamless surface. A joined surface uses multiple pieces of projection material, which creates a different consideration.

Depending on the joining process, a seam can introduce a visible line or a local difference in texture, reflectivity or flatness. Visibility can vary with the content, seating distance and light direction. It should not automatically be described as invisible or unacceptable.

If you are considering a joined screen, request a demonstration of the exact construction using bright uniform fields, slow camera pans and normal movie scenes.

Compare construction at the size you will buy

WUPRO option Currently published construction How to use this information
CBSP fixed frame Recommended most strongly at 72–120 inches; 130–150-inch versions use a horizontally joined projection surface Choose 72–120 inches for the best balance, or assess the join before ordering a larger size
CBSP motorized Available up to 130 inches; the current price step from 120 to 130 inches is substantial Treat 72–120 inches as the practical sweet spot; for a seamless large motorized screen, compare Lenticular UST, while KBSP remains the fixed-frame route
KBSP fixed frame at 130–133 inches Seamless projection surface in the confirmed size range Preferred fixed-frame route for a one-piece UST optical surface between 120 and 150 inches
150-inch Gallery Evo Black Grid Lenticular CLR One-piece projection surface Preferred fixed-frame option when a seamless 150-inch UST surface is the priority
Peacock Evo Fresnel fixed frame Current FAQ describes 100–150 inches as continuous optical surfaces Compare side-seat brightness and confirm the exact size
Lenticular UST motorized floor rising Large seamless options include 130, 133 and 150 inches Preferred large-format motorized route when the screen must disappear after viewing
Soft Grey Matte or a custom larger motorized size Often a more accessible route when budget and a continuous 150-inch-plus surface take priority Confirm UST compatibility, tensioning, brightness and the construction of the exact size

For 72–120-inch family viewing, CBSP is usually the most balanced choice. At 130–133 inches, start with KBSP for a seamless fixed-frame installation, or seamless Lenticular UST when you need a motorized floor-rising screen. At 150 inches, start with seamless Lenticular UST in either fixed-frame or floor-rising form rather than a joined CBSP fixed-frame surface. For strong daytime ambient light and predominantly centered seating, include Peacock Evo Fresnel.

For a controlled room, Soft Grey Matte remains worth testing, particularly when a dedicated seamless UST optical screen at the required size is unavailable or exceeds the budget. The selected screen must still provide adequate flatness, and the brightness trade-off must suit the room.

At 180–200 inches, confirm the final projector installation chart and obtain a size-specific screen proposal. Availability at 150 inches does not establish availability, seamless construction or equivalent optical performance at 200 inches.

Choose the Installation Format Separately

Once you have shortlisted the material, choose how the screen will fit into the room.

Format A useful fit for What to confirm
Fixed frame A permanent cinema wall Frame dimensions, mounting position, surface tension and access for assembly
Motorized floor rising A shared room where the screen should retract Housing length, deployed image height, clearance and an unobstructed projection path
Motorized drop down A room with a wall or ceiling mounting position above the image Drop length, deployed screen position, tension and UST optical orientation

For retractable UST use, prioritize a screen designed to maintain a flat surface. Small waves can become conspicuous when light reaches the screen at a steep angle.

The WUPRO Seamless Lenticular UST floor-rising screen is a separate product from the CBSP floor-rising range. Its large seamless options include 130, 133 and 150 inches; confirm the selected size and material on the quotation.

For a smaller drop-down CBSP setup, consider WUPRO FlowArc CBSP. A ceiling-mounted screen housing still works with a projector below the screen; it does not establish compatibility with a ceiling-mounted projector.

Use the final AURA 3 installation chart for the selected diagonal. The required cabinet depth includes the projector body and its placement relative to the screen plane. Check image offset, screen-bottom height and obstacles such as a soundbar before fixing the screen position.

Our Recommendations by Room and Viewing Priority

Your setup Start with Why we would shortlist it
A darkroom, mainly used for screening films at night and when budgets are limited Soft Grey Matte, compared with Soft White Matte Evaluate black floor, highlight brightness and your preferred image appearance
Limited budget, controlled light and a 150-inch-plus motorized screen Soft Grey Matte A large continuous surface may be more attainable than a seamless dedicated UST optical material; confirm UST compatibility and tensioning
72–120-inch living room, ceiling lights and a wide sofa CBSP Wide, flexible seating with high perceived contrast and overhead-light control
Seamless 130–133-inch fixed-frame UST setup KBSP Preferred one-piece fixed-frame optical option in this intermediate large-screen range
Seamless 150-inch fixed-frame family cinema Black Grid Lenticular UST Preferred dedicated UST option with a one-piece 150-inch image area and wider seating flexibility
Seamless 130-, 133- or 150-inch motorized cinema Lenticular UST floor rising Preferred large-format retractable route with a continuous one-piece surface
Strong ambient light, daytime viewing and centered seats Fresnel ALR The strongest daytime image quality when viewers remain within the central high-gain area
Very sensitive to laser speckle Sample testing before choosing Material labels and video footage cannot establish your personal result

For an AURA 3 Max in a shared living room, size and installation format should guide the shortlist: CBSP at 72–120 inches, KBSP for a seamless 130–133-inch fixed-frame installation, and seamless Lenticular UST for a 150-inch fixed frame or a 130-, 133- or 150-inch motorized floor-rising screen.

For a predominantly centered daytime setup, Fresnel becomes the first material to compare. For evening cinema with effective light control, add Soft Grey Matte rather than assuming an optical ALR screen is mandatory.

Test Samples With the Projector and Room You Will Use

If you already have the projector, a sample comparison can help narrow the choice. If you are ordering before it arrives, use samples to understand the materials and complete the projector-specific assessment later.

Start with the WUPRO screen material sample kit, confirming which materials are included.

Compare samples in the same screen plane and location, mounted flat and in the correct orientation. Keep the projector settings and content consistent.

View dark scenes, bright highlights, subtitles and broad areas of color from your regular seats. Repeat with your normal lights on and off. Assess visible speckle directly with your eyes.

Small samples help assess local appearance. They do not establish full-screen brightness uniformity, seam visibility or flatness on a 150-inch installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Soft Grey Matte be used with a UST projector?

Yes. WUPRO Soft Grey Matte is specified for UST use, including the Gallery fixed-frame product. It is most appropriate when ambient light is controlled and the screen remains flat.

It is also worth considering when the budget is limited or when you need a very large motorized screen, such as 150 inches or above. Seamless dedicated UST optical materials become less common and can be significantly more expensive at these sizes, while Soft Grey Matte may offer a more accessible route to a continuous projection surface.

It offers a different balance from dedicated UST CLR: broad viewing coverage and a gray matte appearance, with less directional protection against room light. It is therefore best treated as a controlled-light, budget-conscious large-screen option—not as an ALR replacement for a bright room. Evaluate the exact material, flatness and construction at your intended size before deciding.

Which is better for AURA 3: CBSP or Fresnel?

Start with CBSP for a wide sofa, flexible seating and strong contrast, particularly from 72 to 120 inches. Start with Fresnel for strong ambient light, daytime viewing and the best image quality from centered seats.

Fresnel's highest-gain viewing area is narrower. If several viewers regularly sit toward the left and right sides, CBSP will usually provide a more consistent picture across the sofa.

Which screen material should I choose at 120, 130–133 or 150 inches?

  • Up to 120 inches: CBSP is usually the best all-round choice for high contrast, wide seating and flexible fixed-frame or motorized installation.
  • 130–133 inches: KBSP is the preferred fixed-frame choice when you require a seamless UST optical surface. For a motorized floor-rising installation, choose the separate seamless Lenticular UST range. Large CBSP fixed-frame versions are joined, while the 130-inch CBSP motorized option is significantly more expensive than the 120-inch version.
  • 150 inches: Seamless Lenticular UST is the preferred choice for a one-piece optical surface and family seating, with both fixed-frame and motorized floor-rising formats available. Consider Fresnel instead when strong ambient light and centered daytime viewing are the priorities.

These recommendations assume that the exact product supports the required size and installation format. Always confirm construction before ordering.

Are all 150-inch UST screens seamless?

No. Construction varies by model. WUPRO's 130–150-inch CBSP fixed-frame variants use horizontally joined projection surfaces, while the separate 150-inch Lenticular UST models are designed around a seamless one-piece surface.

Ask about the projection surface, rather than whether the frame is assembled from several pieces.

Will Soft Grey Matte or CBSP eliminate laser speckle?

Neither should be sold with that guarantee. They are options to compare when visible speckle matters, but the result depends on the projector, surface, viewing conditions and viewer sensitivity.

Test representative content directly. A camera recording may show speckle differently from your eyes.

Can Fresnel or lenticular CLR overcome direct sunlight?

Use blinds, shading or a different screen position to keep direct sunlight off the image.
