Choosing a screen for an ultra-short-throw projector is not simply a question of which material is “better.” Fresnel ALR and lenticular CLR screens use different optical structures, so each is better suited to a different room, seating layout and viewing priority.

The short answer is this:If you frequently watch during the day, the room has strong or complex ambient light coming from both sides, and you primarily watch from a position near the center of the screen, then choose a Fresnel ALR screen. First, What Do ALR and CLR Mean?

How Does a Fresnel ALR Screen Work?


A Fresnel ALR screen uses a multi-layer optical surface with concentric or semicircular microstructures. These structures are designed around the steep upward projection angle of a UST projector.

Light from the projector enters the screen from below and is redirected toward the main viewing area. Light arriving from other directions—particularly from above and the sides—is absorbed, redirected or prevented from washing out the image as strongly as it would on a conventional white screen.

Strong light shining directly toward the front of any projection screen travels along a similar path to the reflected image and is difficult to reject completely. Curtains, blinds, and thoughtful lamp placement can still significantly improve daytime performance.
