Step 1: Identify Your Projector Type

Ultra-Short-Throw Projectors

An ultra-short-throw projector is normally placed on a cabinet or platform directly below the screen. Because the light reaches the screen at a steep upward angle, it must be paired with a material designed for UST projection.

Recommended options include:

Do not use a conventional long-throw ALR material with a UST projector unless the material is specifically confirmed as UST-compatible. A directional long-throw ALR surface may reject the projector’s light instead of reflecting it toward the viewer.

Standard- and Long-Throw Projectors

Standard- and long-throw projectors are normally positioned several feet or metres away from the screen. They require materials designed to receive light from the front.

Step 2: Match the Screen to Your Room Lighting

Bright Living Room

If you regularly watch during the day or with ceiling lights on, prioritize a directional UST material such as:

  • CBSP
  • Black Grid Lenticular
  • Fresnel

For standard- and long-throw projectors, consider:

  • LT Lenticular
  • Black Crystal
  • Gray Crystal

No projection screen can completely overcome direct sunlight. For the best daytime image, avoid placing the screen opposite an uncovered window and reduce light falling directly onto the screen.

Low or Controlled Ambient Light

If you normally watch with curtains closed or with only low background lighting, you have more flexibility.

Soft Gray Matte is generally the most balanced option when natural color, improved perceived black levels and low laser speckle are equally important.

Dark Home Theater

Step 3: Consider RGB Laser Speckle

Laser speckle can appear as a fine shimmering or grain-like texture, especially with RGB triple-laser projectors. Its visibility depends on both the projector and the screen surface.

  • 0 = virtually no visible speckle

  • 10 = very obvious visible speckle

  • The higher the score, the more noticeable the laser speckle is likely to be.

What is the best screen material for an ultra-short-throw projector?

For a bright living room, CBSP, black-grid lenticular or Fresnel materials are usually the strongest options. CBSP and black-grid lenticular screens provide wide viewing angles and strong overhead-light rejection, while Fresnel screens offer higher gain and stronger multidirectional ambient-light rejection.

If you plan to watch movies exclusively in a dark room and have a limited budget, “Soft Gray Matte” and “Soft White Matte” are the best value options.

What is the difference between ALR and CLR?

ALR means Ambient Light Rejecting and describes screens designed to reduce the effect of unwanted room light.

CLR means Ceiling Light Rejecting and usually refers to a screen designed to absorb or redirect light arriving from above. Many UST lenticular screens are described as both ALR and CLR because they reject overhead ambient light while improving image contrast.

Not every ALR screen is compatible with a UST projector. Always confirm projector compatibility before purchasing.

What Is Screen Gain?

Screen gain describes how much light a screen reflects toward the viewer compared with a standard reference surface.

  • Below 1.0 gain: Usually improves perceived black levels but reduces overall brightness
  • Around 1.0 gain: Balanced brightness and viewing angle
  • Above 1.0 gain: Produces a brighter central image but may reduce brightness uniformity across a wide seating area

A higher gain is not automatically better. The right gain depends on projector brightness, screen size, seating position and room lighting.

What Is Viewing Angle?

Viewing angle describes the seating range within which the image remains acceptably bright and consistent.

Matte materials generally provide wide and even viewing angles. Directional ALR and Fresnel materials concentrate more light toward the audience, so brightness may decrease for viewers seated far to the side.

Is Fresnel better than a lenticular UST screen?

Neither material is universally better.

Fresnel materials typically offer higher gain and are more effective at suppressing ambient light from multiple directions. They perform particularly well in brightly lit rooms where the seating area is centrally located, but they have a narrow viewing angle.

Lenticular UST materials generally provide a wider and more consistent viewing area. They are often the better choice for larger seating arrangements or motorized screens.

Can I use a regular matte screen with a UST projector?

Yes, provided the screen is flat and properly tensioned. Soft Gray Matte, Soft White Matte and Woven AT can be used with many UST projectors.

However, matte materials do not provide the same ceiling-light rejection as CBSP, UST lenticular or Fresnel screens. They perform best in dark or well-controlled rooms.

Which screen material is best for reducing RGB laser speckle?

Woven AT, Soft White Matte and Soft Gray Matte generally provide the lowest visible laser speckle. LT Lenticular can also offer a useful balance between image quality and reduced speckle for standard- and long-throw projectors.

Should I choose a gray or white projector screen?

Choose Soft White Matte when brightness, wide viewing angles and natural color reproduction are the main priorities and the room can be kept dark.

Choose Soft Gray Matte when you want deeper perceived black levels and improved contrast while retaining a wide viewing angle and relatively low laser speckle.

Does a higher screen gain always produce a better image?

No. Higher gain can increase central image brightness, but it may also reduce viewing-angle uniformity, increase hotspotting or make laser speckle more noticeable.

The best gain depends on the projector’s calibrated brightness, screen size, room lighting and seating layout.

Do ALR screens work in daylight?

ALR and CLR screens can significantly improve image contrast in rooms with ambient light, but they cannot fully overcome direct sunlight.

For the best daytime performance, prevent sunlight from falling directly on the screen and use curtains or blinds where possible.

When do I need an acoustically transparent screen?

Choose an acoustically transparent screen when the front speakers or center channel will be installed behind the projected image.

Woven AT is particularly suitable for dedicated home theaters, large screens and RGB triple-laser projectors where both sound placement and laser-speckle reduction are important.

Is a fixed-frame screen better than a motorized screen?

The screen material determines most of the optical performance. The screen format primarily affects installation, convenience and flatness.

A fixed-frame screen normally provides permanent tension and is ideal for dedicated theaters. A motorized floor-rising or drop-down screen is better for multipurpose rooms where the screen needs to disappear when not in use.

Can I test the material before buying a complete screen?

Why do some ALR screens show more laser speckle?

Some ALR screens use directional optical structures that concentrate reflected light toward the viewer. With RGB triple-laser projectors, this can sometimes make laser speckle more noticeable than on more diffusive matte or woven screens.

However, ALR itself does not automatically cause more speckle. Performance also depends on the projector, screen structure, gain, viewing distance, and lighting conditions.

Does screen gain affect laser speckle?
